SC Treasurer Talks Money with Children of LPL Employees

Justin Vargas, 14, never met a politician until today, when South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis sat down at his table at LPL Financial’s second annual Take Your Child to Work Day. Treasurer Loftis was at the firm’s Fort Mill campus to deliver a financial literacy presentation to about 50 6th to 9th grade children of LPL employees. After chatting one on one with the treasurer, Vargas said, “He made me realize how important it is to save money.”

Treasurer Loftis led a session on “Need versus Wants,” adapted from the Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program powered by Everfi. In it, he stressed the importance of budgeting, setting goals, spending wisely and saving money. “If you start now, when you’re older you’ll have better stuff. It will make a huge difference in how you live,” Loftis said.

The presentation was the kick off to the Take Your Kid to Work event, organized by LPL’s Working Parents Employee Resource Group (ERG), one of eight ERGs that aligns employee communities to support LPL’s business. The event, also held at LPL’s San Diego campus, included an interactive game with the opportunity to play the role of a financial advisor and a series of meetings with representatives from each of LPL’s business units. The children also toured the LPL campus, providing students a first-hand understanding of their parent’s career and contribution to the success of the firm. Parents took part in a 529 College Savings session hosted by program sponsor Columbia Threadneedle.

“It’s exciting to learn about LPL and what my mom does,” said Nathan Borchardt, 13. “I usually spend all my money, but now I think I’ll save it.”

Burt White, a father of four and LPL managing director and chief investment officer, also spent time talking with students after the presentation. “Financial literacy is so valuable and the sooner you can be exposed to it, the more effective you can be creating a successful financial future. What we do here every day at LPL starts with conversations likes this—with the need to budget, save and invest to be able to reach a bright financial future.”
